Goal setting tips in business aren’t a set it and forget it thing. True goal setting requires a hard look at where you’ve been in business, and where you want to go.
Just as goals are super important to set in business and in life, so too is the “why” behind those goals.
Goals are a part of the New Year, new quarters and changes in seasons. We are always setting and refining those goals.
We are always measuring our progress and making adjustments in our actions.
Since goals are crucial to making forward progress, that “why” behind each goal is even MORE important!
Why? 😊
Well, let’s dive in! Today I am taking a closer look at the “why”, and our intentions behind the goals we set!
You “why” is crucial for many reasons! Seeing the goal through to the end being one!
Goal Setting Tips #1: What is the “why” behind that goal that you set?
One thing I strongly encourage my clients to do when working with me, is to set the goal first, but to also take some time to really figure out their “why”.
This can easily be done with journaling or sitting with that thought.
Taking notes and really verbalizing or writing out “why” that goal matters to you are the first steps in creating goals that stick!
For example, let’s say you set a goal for “x” amount of new email subscribers.
GREAT! I love that goal!
Why is that goal important to you?
Why do you want those new subscribers on your list? New clients, new members, or amount of sales from that offer?
Sit with this question and really think about why those email subscribers matter to you.
Tip #2: What impact does reaching that goal have on you?
These goal setting tips are more than just tips!
I really want you to sit with each step in this process and do the work to get the clarity around the goals you are setting.
Once you have had some time to journal on why that goal is important, now take a moment to see what impact reaching that goal has on your business and life.
Yes, you’ve determined why it’s important to start filling your membership or group program. Because as a service provider you know you have to leverage your time better.
But what is the deeper impact of that shift in your business away from 1:1 and toward group programs…on your life?
I know for me, having only so many hours in the day or SO much of my income tied to one client that a group program meant more freedom to me.
Deep down, I went into business for the freedom! Right?!
So what is that impact on your business with those added email subscribers or sales or members?
What does that look like for you?
Again, really sit with this question and journal though it. Hitting that goal of more email subscribers or clients looks different for everyone!
What does it look like for you?

Tip #3: Keep that vision front and center
Keeping that picture you just created in the first 2 steps is key to remembering why you are doing the work you are doing.
Goals that are worth reaching will take time, and bring with it a lot of ups and downs.
Remembering why I got started, gives me a stronger motivation to keep going.
Keeping your vision front and center can be done in a variety of ways, but here are a couple ideas of what’s worked for me:
- Create a vision board and keep in on my desktop or phone background (wherever I can see it daily)
- Write out my goals everyday to keep them top of mind
- Write them out as I plan my month and week – this keeps me on track
No matter what stage of business you’re at, goal setting is important. Even more important is the “Why” behind those goals!
Your “why” is what keeps you moving forward and going in the direction towards those goals!
Knowing your destination is key in determining the actions steps you’ll take to get there.
